Engineers who need to keep up with new technologies being developed in the LT and MEWP industry.

Course pre-requisite:

Good working knowledge of engine principles.

Objective of the programme:

After attending the programme, the engineer will have a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of alternative fuel systems and the operational effects in the LT and Powered Access Industry.

Programme content:

  1. LPG
  2. LNG
  3. CNG
  4. Bio-alcohol and ethanol
  5. Biodiesel
  6. Hydrogen

Comparisons, analysis, and evaluation of using alternative fuels:

  • Identify the benefits of alternative fuel systems
  • Analyse the benefits of a selection of alternative fuel with regards to economic advantages and environmental benefits
  • Analyse the effects on engine power and consumption for a selection of alternative fuel in comparison to conventional internal combustion engine
  • Compare the conversion process for each alternative fuel, its benefits and storage solutions – to include costs, mileage or running hours, break even figures and annual mileage or operational hours
  • Explore and analyse the relevant design features for alternative fuel with regards to engine design and specific materials required for engine component manufacture.
  • Analyse the vehicle design features required to accommodate alternative fuel conversions and their effects
  • Electric Vehicle design and infrastructure:
  • Need for Electric vehicles
  • Types of Electric vehicle including, Battery electric vehicle, fuelled electric vehicle, solar powered vehicle, super capacitors
  • Electric vehicle safety precautions including power down and deactivation
  • Operation of electric motors to drive vehicles
  • Energy storage systems including nickel metal hydride, lithium Ion, High voltage batteries, ultras capacitors and variable regulation lead acid (VRLA), AGM:
  • Regenerative braking systems
  • Hydrogen fuel cell operation
  • Legislation around the recycling and disposal of batteries
  • Hydrogen fuel cell operation
  • Safety precautions to include:
    • Restrictions relating to legislation when working on or around High voltage vehicles
    • Power down and deactivation
